Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Did we have a big family reunion here for Christmas! They rented all 8 rooms for 4 days, opened presents under the tree next to the fireplace for 3 hours, played our piano and sang carols, cooked their own Christmas dinner here, ate in our huge dining room and washed the dishes. Thank you! Montrose families joined us for breakfast.
I wanted to break all the rules of bed and breakfast, so I found a large historic mansion where all 8 rooms are large and on the main floor (instead of small and upstairs) all the rooms would have private baths after renovation ‘92 and ’93 (instead of shared baths); it would be the most affordable B&B on the Western Slope (and it is) instead of really expensive. And 12-14 ft. high ceilings make our B&B home elegant. How about a private two-person jacuzzi, king bed, fireplace, DVD; we have one of those. A TV, refrigerator and microwave are in each room, and there is access to wireless internet. Shuffle out in your PJs at 7 for coffee; breakfast will be ready around 8 and I will serve up to 9:30 am.
Time flew by and I’ve been hostess here at the Uncompahgre for over 15 years and have had the best time of my life, meeting interesting people and experiencing their exciting travels vicariously at the breakfast table. Then I discovered we live in the middle of Paradise, (this is God’s country) so we started to explore the area. You just have to see the awesome Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park just East of Montrose; we go there often. In early Oct., I call-forwarded my phone and just took off. Well, all the places that I thought we needed a 4WD vehicle were easy to get to like Owl Creek Pass, Kebler Pass, Grand Mesa, Lands End Road, and more. With the Buick Park Avenue, Don and I did about 12 different adventures, all nearby. They could have been short trips except Don wants to take a picture every 15 seconds because every turn in the road left us breathless, with fall colors especially. Then, if you or someone drives a 4WD, go to Engineer and Imogene passes near Ouray.

If you have a bike, let me tell you where to go.

Check the net for food, music, wine festivals and other events. Horseback ride on gorgeous trails; swim at Montrose’s aquatic center.

Winter sports are all around. If you want to try everything, go to the Grand Mesa and cross country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile and then downhill at Powderhorn ski resort. Of course there is Telluride to the South and Crested Butte to the East. Ice climb in Ouray (maybe you just want to watch) and then relax in the hot springs there. Whew!! It’s too much.

Getting up at 3:30 am to cook breakfast for the hunters gets them out for deer and elk; then I go back to bed. If someone catches fish nearby and keeps them, I’ll cook them (but we get some too). There are a lot of restaurants in Montrose and Ridgway; I keep updated menus here.

Scroll down to the bottom to see our eight rooms. The romantic French Country jacuzzi room attracts honeymooners and anniversary folks. Then call me on our 800 number.
